Reactivation of Vessels After Lay‑Up
Professional Reactivation Solutions for All Vessel Types
Faroe Maritime Services provides tailor‑made reactivation solutions for vessels returning to service after short‑ or long‑term lay‑up. We support shipowners, managers, and operators with a structured, class‑aligned reactivation process that ensures the vessel is safe, compliant, and fully operational.
Whether the vessel has been laid up for weeks, months, or years, we deliver a complete reactivation plan based on class requirements, flag state rules, PMS history, and the vessel’s preservation condition.

What Determines the Scope of Reactivation?
The extent of reactivation work depends on:
- Duration of lay‑up
- Preservation plan and lay‑up logbook
- Class survey reports and docking history
- Conditions of Class and due surveys
- Flag State requirements
- Maker’s recommendations
- Internal technical/engineering assessments
- PMS status and historical maintenance
- Previous sea trial records
We evaluate all these elements before defining the vessel’s reactivation specification.
Reactivation Specifications
Each equipment/system receives a dedicated reactivation specification including:
- Scope of work for the next operational contract
- Condition assessment (inspection, functional testing, NDT, analysis)
- Overhaul, renewal, or replacement requirements
- Test protocols
- Sea trial protocols (if required)
This ensures a structured and verifiable reactivation process.
Reactivation Period Requirements
During reactivation, the following must be ensured:
- Reactivation checklist is followed
- All specification items are completed
- Job reports recorded in PMS
- Class status changed to “active” with no due surveys
- PMS fully updated
- Vessel confirmed fit for operation
We coordinate and supervise these steps to ensure full compliance.
Completion of Reactivation
Before the vessel resumes operations, the following must be addressed:
Records
Internal company records updated.
Insurance
Notify P&I Club and H&M provider at least 7 days before departure to arrange any required surveys.
Contract Deployment
If reactivated for charter, conduct a kick‑off meeting to verify all systems and contractual equipment.
Manning & Crew Mobilization
Define manning levels and mobilize officers and ratings as per safe manning and contract requirements.
Logistics
Release and deliver all stores and equipment held ashore.
Sourcing
Restart purchase order processing and prioritize items needed for reactivation and upcoming charter.
Vessel Autonomy
Start all systems to confirm good working order and independence from shore power.
Pending Recommendations
Close critical audit findings before class/flag attendance.
Flag State
Inform flag state of reactivation and operational readiness.
Classification Society
Requirements vary by lay‑up duration:
Laid up < 3 months
Class surveyor must attend if:
- Overdue/due surveys
- Conditions of Class with due limit dates
Laid up ≥ 3 months
Class surveyor must attend to change status from “laid‑up” to “in operation”.
